MAKING A LIFETIME COMMITTMENT

While some newly adopted animals fit into their new home right from the start, that is not always the case, and if you go into the new relationship expecting that, you are likely to be disappointed. Please be prepared to allow your new family member several weeks to settle into your home and get to know all the family members, and different situations. If you see behaviors that concern you, address them immediately. This is not just for your benefit, but for your animal’s as well. If your frustration leads to you surrendering your animal at a shelter, the problem hasn't been resolved, and may very well be an issue for someone else. You wouldn't want someone to give up on you, and your adopted animal feels the same way.

We have compiled some links we hope will be helpful to you either in your search for a new 4-legged family member, or to assist you in being a better guardian to the animals you already have or later adopt.

DOG BREEDS DOG CHANNEL provides an alphabetical listing of breeds includes their size, care of, temperament, and a link to a QUIZ to determine what types of breeds might be best for you and your family

CAT BREEDS CAT CHANNEL provides an alphabetical listing of breeds, along with general care/personality traits. Please note that many shelter animals are “Heinz 57” brands – meaning a mix of 2 or more breeds. However, breed knowledge will help you in determining what mixes may be the best match for your family.

FUN TIME!

Dog Parks: Hampton Roads dog parents are fortunate to have several off-leash areas for their canine companion to run and play with other dogs. Please exercise good dog park etiquette by only bringing dogs who are spay/neutered, fully vaccinated, and who enjoy the company of other dogs (and remember bags to scoop your dog's poop)! Ready to have some fun? Check out some of these dog parks: Norfolk, Ghent Dog Park, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, PETA Dog Park.

Vacation Time: Traveling with Your Dog or Cat is easy with this site whose searchable database will lead you to hotels that allow dogs and cats.

WHEN YOUR PET IS LOST

It is something we hope never happens, but when it does, the key is to act quickly. The link below provides helpful suggestions. Lost and Found ads can be placed in the Virginian Pilot (short ads are actually free). It is important to check not just the animal control in your city, but in neighboring cities as well.

How to Find a Lost Pet

MOVING

Way too many animals are surrendered to shelters due to landlord issues. Please plan ahead for your move by researching options for people with animals. We are working on compiling/finding a list of Hampton Roads' pet friendly apartment complexes, but for now want to mention one that was brought to our attention: South Beach Apartments.
