Anita

So here's the update for Anita. The limp she had at the shelter was a torn ACL. She had surgery on her knee to help her walk normally again. It took about two months of recovery time but now she is walking, running and swimming just fine.

She's gained about 30 pounds in weight and looks so much better! She was 53 pounds at the shelter and now she is about 85 pounds- a healthy weight for an Akita. Right now she is still suffering from her skin condition on her nose and paws, that she had at the shelter when we adopted her. We've tried a number of different treatments to help, but haven't quite cured it yet. Right now she is on thyroid medication as her test showed her as low. We are hoping the thyroid medication will clear up her skin.

Anita plays with our other two dogs now. It was hard to imagine that back when we adopted her because she was so stand offish. She plays tug of war with them, gets in barking contests with the beagle mix and loves to play "tag". She's doing wonderful with the indoor cats too, and learning not to chew up kitty toys.

We were surprised to find out she was house trained, crate trained, knew "sit", "shake", "up" and "down" when we adopted her. She didn't let on to this at the shelter, but when we had treats at home she suddenly "remembered" all her tricks.

We take her on walks around the three lakes we live near in Richmond. She's a low energy dog that loves belly rubs, but she also enjoys a good walk with lots of great things to sniff. This past summer we took her beach camping with us and our other dogs. She loved running into the ocean and trying to eat the waves. She's also gone to the James River and loves to swim.

Anita is incredibility intelligent and very easy to train. She's a wonderful addition to the household. Thank you for saving her and giving her a chance to find a home!

I've attached pictures of my fiancee holding her and some of our "water" trips.

Zoe (formerly Gloria)

Many a NACC animal has been fortunate enough to know Shannon, one of the shelter's volunteers. However, Zoe worked some extra charm on Shannon, and managed to join her family as an official member on May 8, 2009. We should mention that two NACC cats, Mr. Chow and Bean, had also accomplished a similar feat (as you can see, they are fat and happy, but we owe Shannon the disclaimer that yes, they were that big when she adopted them)! You can read Zoe's fairy-tale story on Shannon's blog.

Sunshine

We decided to add a new member to our family in July. After losing our beloved black lab, Chopper, to lymphoma in April, we were lonely-especilally our 5 year old yellow lab Angel. We wanted a mature dog, someone who wasn't going to harass Miss Angel. Our quest began at local shelters and ended at NACC at Pam Painter's home. We actually were looking at another dog there, but she was too dominant with Angel. When we were leaving the shelter, my husband-Jay, saw Sunshine's flyer on the wall. He said she sounds just like Angel. I wrote the number down but never called. I was concerned about her age. Then our sister-in-law, Ashley Griffiths, told us about a dog her friend was fostering. Her name was Sunshine. We thought that was too coincidental-so we called. We first met Sunshine at Pam's house. We knew we really lliked her and set up the next meeting at our house. Sunshine went in our house and checked out every room. It was so funny. It was as if she knew it was going to be her new home. We've had her since and are grateful every day. She is the sweetest, funniest lady ever. She loves doing stuff-going for walks, riding in the car and boat. you name it, she's up for it. I reget saying I was hesitant about adopting an older dog. She is wonderful and we just want her remaining years to be filled with love and happiness.

Mello

Just wanted to thank you for all your help in finding another family member. Mello has been a wonderful addition to our family. He’s becoming a big teddy bear with a huge heart of gold. He loves on us constantly like he’s known us forever, and follows my toddler everywhere as if he’s his guardian angel.

Mello has kept his name, as we’ve agreed it fits him. I knew when I seen him he was the one; there was something in his eyes. When I brought my toddler up to see him, both were rubbing on each side of the glass as if they were touching. The older boys adore him as well, and I love his laid back loving ways.

Thank you. We will update you soon.

Diva (now Missy)

I lost my dog, Picabo, on April 17th. She had been with us for 11 1/2 years and later when I lost my husband, she was just so much company. She was also a little SPCA dog when we got her back in ’98 and she was just the best. When I lost her, I decided not to get another dog, but a few weeks later, I decided to stop by Animal Care just to see if I saw another dog anything like her. While there, I met Kathy G. She took this little mixed breed dog out to the fenced in yard and we sat, talked, and watched this little dog for quite a while. I felt that maybe I had taken up much of her time, but she assured me it was ok. I didn’t complete the adoption papers that day, told her I really had to think about this, but if I decided, I would call her back. I waited a few days, still thinking about this little dog who had been surrendered, just happened to turn on NNN channel 48 TV one night, and there was her picture on the screen, “UP FOR ADOPTION.” I decided to drop back by Animal Care, thinking if she was already gone, then I would be happy for her, and I would know She just wasn’t meant to be for me. Well, there she sat. It was then I decided to fill out my papers, go thru the adoption interview, and let her be mine.

This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. She is just so sweet and so well behaved and I just love her. She is just a wonderful little companion and is just so happy to be with me. I would love for her previous owner to know she now has a good home.

Kathy G., thanks for bringing that little dog out and sitting with me that day. You will remember her as “DIVA” but I changed her name and now she is my little “Missy.”

Zilli (formerly Savannah) and Gizmo (formerly Rascal)

I had lost my golden retriever in April, 2008 and wanted a new dog to fill the void. In June, 2008, I felt that I was ready to bring a new dog into my home. I had heard that black dogs are turned in to shelters and euthanized more often than other dogs because they are perceived as being unfriendly or mean. That being the case, I decided that I would try to find a black dog to adopt. I had a 14 year old Sheltie so I needed a dog with a laid back personality and who didn’t need a rambunctious playmate. Zilli appeared to be perfect! Cindy Fleisch, volunteer, was a great help to me during this process. I came to visit Zilli everyday until her adoption date, so that she could get to know me. The day before she was ready to go, it was discovered that she was heartworm positive and would require treatment. That just cinched the deal--Zilli was the dog that was meant to come home with me—she needed me as much as I needed her. I am happy to report that she has completed her heartworm treatment and is now heartworm negative and very healthy. She is my shadow (that’s what her name means in Cherokee) and is a great house dog who has become accustomed to the finer things in life!

Fast forward to spring, 2009—I lost my 15 year old Sheltie and wanted to find a friend for Zilli (and me, of course). I really wanted a Golden Retriever but wasn’t have much luck finding one that I felt was just right for us. Once again, I kept visiting Norfolk Animal Care Center to find THE ONE. I saw Rascal on the website—he was listed as a golden retriever/clumber spaniel mix. When I first went over to see him, who happened to be volunteering that day--Cindy Fleisch! Gizmo seemed to be what I was looking for—small, golden-like, and appeared to do well with other dogs. Zilli came over to meet him and although she wasn’t as enamored with him as he was with her, they appeared to get along well. Gizmo soon joined the household and has been a great addition!

That’s our story. Feel free to share it if you’d like.

Thanks,
Debbie Given

Lulu

Hi,

I just wanted to pass along pictures of Lulu. We adopted her from the NACC about a month ago. She is doing great and has been a wonderful addition to our family! Thanks for bringing her into our lives.

Sincerely,

Stephanie

Sassafras

Our senior cat, Lestat, was lonely; there was no way to mistake it. Nursing school had taken me from my usual homebody routine and after considerable thought; we decided to add to our family. Not having the time or energy for a kitten or young cat, we sought out another senior and found Sassafras. The moment I held her, I was in love. She curled contentedly, unconcernedly in my lap and began to purr immediately. James bonded with her just as easily as I did and we took her home that day. A month later, she has finally adjusted to her new home. Lestat and Sassafras get along famously now that they are used to eachother and their favorite past time this week is racing up and down the stairs in pursuit of something I can’t hope to see as a mere human. She has grown from about 5 lb to 7 lb now and comes running at the sound of her treat container being shaken….. And thanks to a lion cut and a trip to the vet, she is almost completely healed from a nasty bout of fleas she came to the shelter with. We adore our little girl and highly recommend adoption from the Norfolk Animal Care Shelter—especially their senior cats!

Carmen

Thought you might like an update on our Chihuahua named Carmen. She is doing well, eating and has a very playful personality. She is doing great with our Beagle Elmo and gets into his bed with him sometimes. She went on her first road trip to New York for Thanksgiving and is a great traveler. Attached are some pictures we though you might like...she misses you! Hope the pictures get to you.
