One of the best ways YOU can continue to help the animals is by sharing updates of your NACC adoption. Just as college alumni "talk up" their school, we hope you as a NACC alumni will let others know there are wonderful animals waiting at the shelter for a chance to give love and devotion to the person/family who adopts them. "Happy Tails" is where we post the updates from adopters. Have one you'd like to share? Please e-mail us with a text update and include your favorite photo (sorry - we know it's hard to pick just one)!

Schuester (previously Stubbs)
I wanted to let you all know that Stubbs (now Schuester), whom I adopted from NACC a few weeks ago, is doing just great. He and my Jack Russell x, Cooper, spend most of the day wrestling, and the two of them and Louie, my beagle x, love to race each other all around the yard. He makes us laugh every day, whether he's rolling around like a goofball, throwing toys up in the air and catching them or tossing them for the little ones, or any of the other silly, adorable things he does. Though he's very active he loves to cuddle at naptime or bedtime, and he's been a faithful friend to me, my husband and to Louie and Cooper from the start. He couldn't be a more perfect addition to our family-thank you, NACC, for getting our wonderful new companion off the streets and into his new home!
Take care,
Amanda

June Bug (previously Ethyl)
We adopted Ethyl ( now June Bug) in early June of 2010. She came to us with flea allergies and ear infections after clearly being dumped by someone who bred her for a litter of puppies. She has definitely grabbed all of our hearts. She loves playing with toys, going for walks and giving kisses to everyone and sleeping in their laps. She is currently taking obedience classes and enjoys being with all the dogs there. We are thrilled to have her in our lives and we think rescue dogs are the best.

Jersey Girl
Just wanted to give you an update on Jersey Girl. She has nearly doubled in size since I first met her and she is a crazy big goofy puppy. Her timidness disappeared the moment I got her home, she acted like she had lived there forever. She is extremely smart and already knows some commands although we have our times when she thinks it is playing. She is already house broken, it took only about 1.5 weeks and she sits at the door to alert us that she needs to go potty. She comes to the door and barks once to let us know she is ready to come in. She brings me her harness and leash to tell me that she wants to go for a walk. In true puppy style she has chewed up two pair of shoes, only my shoes though in displaying her displeasure when I leave the house.
She is also known for taking my nightgown off the bed and curling up with it if I am gone, even with my husband home. She is ready to play first thing in the morning before I have had a cup of coffee so I let her out to burn off energy in the yard before she eats her breakfast. We started out crating her but she is so smart that she quickly learned how to unlock the entrance with her big paws as she is very strong. I gave her a bath in the bathtub and she did great, she lets me clean her teeth and gums and I can't keep enough toys around because she destroys them faster than I can buy them. She sleeps in our bedroom in her bed beside me and wakes me up by taking her head and lifting my foot or hand if it is hanging off. She likes riding in the car and she behaves very well.
She has been such a joy and she has also helped my husband because two days after he came home from the hospital our(his) elderly Dachshund passed away in his sleep at home, so she has helped him and me in that regards. We knew we were going to have to put him down but my husband who has been in the hospital for the past five months wanted to spend some time with his Dallas, but it was not meant to be. Dallas saved us from having to have him euthanized and he passed away sleeping in his bed. He is back home with us now in his urn. Jersey was very good with him and even for her young age she recognized a good ole boy who just didn't have it in him anymore.
We will come up and visit soon one day, we may be relocating back to Michigan or Ohio where we have family who can help me in caring for my husband but I will always send pictures and keep all of you posted. I especially appreciated your assistance and making arrangements with Barbara for me to have Jersey, She is my big baby girl and she reads me like a book. She has and does bring so much joy and love into our lives and she also loves her Daddy but she knows who her Momma is.
In Great Appreciation;
Sincerely,
Becky Morton

WALTER (previously Duke)
Hello:
Walter...the kitten we just adopted. He was in the shelter
as Duke, but I changed it. He is wonderful!!! His face is too sweet
for words. The other animals are taking to him except Sweetie the big
domestic cat. She's on the fence sometimes 'cause Walter wants to
play. But Roxy, the medium sized dog who is Shepherd, Doberman mix is
just full of love for him. Shortie, the Brown Lab Basset Hound mix is
OK with him, until Walter goes after his tail. He doesn't dig that too
much. And forget about Maggie Mae, our about to be 15 year old cat.
She doesn't like any of the other animals. We really have to make
special Maggie time so she feels connected.

MERYL
Hello:
We adopted Meryl a couple of months ago. We went in to look at the animals without any real expectation to find one. As soon as her crate was opened, she crawled in my lap and started purring. We adopted her and have been very happy to have her as part of our family. She is so loveable and tolerates our children very well. Everyone in the family loves her. We couldn't ask for a better pet. Thank you.

REMY & DIAMOND
Hello:
Me and my husband recently adopted two puppies. Our first puppy Remy(white) was the sweetest thing I ever met. I was bugging my husband to get me a puppy and when I came home, I saw this little shy puppy. I instantly fell in love. I went back to the same shelter so that I can put in a packet to volunteer. My husband decided to go and have a look at some of the animals. Soon after he rushed back to the front to grab me to look at this puppy. I was thinking to myself Remy was enough for now. But when I saw this puppy, she instantly had my heart. People would walk to her pen and she would get up out of her bed and walk to the fence and once they left, she put her nose to the ground and walked(looking sad) back to her bed. I wanted her more than my husband, so we took her to the meet and greet room. Lol, she had a blast with the rubber ball. We decide to put in an application for her and got instantly approved. So we picked her up the next day. We named her Diamond. They are my life, I wouldn't give them up for the world. My new babies!!!

HANK
Hello:
I wanted to give you another happy ending story! We adopted our dog back in July of 2008, he is a pit/boxer mix. We named him Hank. He and our 3 year old son are best friends. They sleep, play and always sit together. He is VERY protective of our family. My husband is in the military and often away from home. He doesn't let anyone he does not know anywhere near our son. We just had our second son in February and Hank walks the floors at night between both of our sons rooms and sits beside the baby when he cries. I have never seen a better dog. Thank you all so much for this wonderful addition to our family!

GILLESPIE & JONSEY
To Whom It May Concern:
I want to thank the staff of the Norfolk Animal Care Center on the wonderful experience we recently had at your facility. We had just lost our much beloved beagle, Waylon Jennings on May 29, 2010 to renal failure. We were devastated. We decided to adopt a “big black dog” because we had heard that there was difficulty in finding them homes. We then went to the Norfolk Animal Control Center we were a little afraid due to the days of the dark, dank and dirty City Pound. What we experienced was far from those horrible days!
The staff and volunteers are wonderful! We found our boy Gillespie, formerly known as Astro, the first day we visited. He had been found as a stray and had a 10 day hold on him. We visited the NACC each day to see “our boy”. The pens were always clean and the staff was friendly. It was evident to us that the staff genuinely put the animal’s welfare first. Always gentle and kind, they were truly excited when an animal was placed in a new home.
Gillespie came home and has been an absolute joy. The staff had worked with him on his “sit” command and he is picking up obedience training quickly. He is flourishing and has quickly worked his way into the family dynamic. He even gets along with our two older kitties!
The cat holding area is clean and all the kitties look happy. There is no cat box odor. This, in itself, is almost a miracle due to the large number of kitties being housed.
My daughter ended up adopting a kitty, Jonesy, formerly Jett. You couldn’t ask for a better adjusted pet! Friendly and absolutely beautiful, Jonesy has won the hearts of all who have met him.
The change from City Pound to Norfolk Animal Care Center is evident. Everyday we visited the NACC people were in looking at and adopting new family members. I hope people will continue to find the NACC and give all the beautiful animals a chance at life and a loving home. They deserve no less. I know that my family and I will be spreading the good news!!!!
Gillespie, Jonesy and the rest of the family say, THANK YOU!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Michael Farrell

CHASE
Hello,
We would just like to report on our dog and our best friend "Chase". We adopted "Chase" on Oct 17,2009 and have LOVED every minute with him since! He has brought so much joy to our lives.our family, as well as others.
When we decided to adopt, we had already decided that we wanted a smaller dog and we wanted to rescue a homeless friend. It has only been a little over six months and "Chase" is a perfect match. "Chase" loves to go anywhere and everywhere with us. Trips to the store, walks, motorcycle events, swap meets and anywhere that will allow our four legged friend to enter the premises. Yes, "Chase" does ride on the back of a motorcycle. He has his own pet carrier (we made this especially for him) and is secured with a harness that keeps him totally secure . We even went a step further bought him a special motorcycle helmet. We tried goggles/glasses and found none that would work well with him, so we made him a custom windshield for his carrier. We did not like the idea that anything could get into his eyes and hurt him in any way. "Chase" loves to ride on my motorcycle and he bringing so much joy into others lives as well. People are constantly taking pictures and giving us hand jester's (thumbs up) as we sit at stop lights on our bike. "Chase" went to the Outer Banks, NC. Bike Week this year and was a big hit. Here is the link to his picture and video leaving Vertigo Tattoo: http://outerbanksvoice.com/2010/04/23/get-ready-for-the-rumbling/
You will have to scroll about half way down and Chase's picture is under the "Hooter's" picture. His video is next to his picture.
We just want to thank you for such a wonderful addition to our family and we tell everyone to visit NACC or their local rescue organizations to adopt.
Thank you,
Denise & Frank Lupton

FRED
After so many years we still can not believe that anyone would not want to have this sweetie, let alone find him in a shelter.
He makes my husband and I & all who visit smile and laugh every single day!
Yes, it has been about 4 years since we rescued him and everyday has been a joy. My only regret was not adopting his brother when NCAA gave me the chance.
We could not have asked for a more intelligent, silly, smart and loving dog. He has us well trained!
I think the picture says it all....
He has made our life complete. Thanks,
Sherry

SEUSS
I would like to thank everyone there at the Norfolk Animal Care Center for taking care of my "fur baby" Seuss (aka: Ziggy to his friends at NACC) while I was piddling around, considering adoption. Jake, you are an amazing guy and I really appreciate you helping me pick the perfect match for our family. :) He's wonderful with our children, and loves to be loved! My ONLY complaint would be that he has no issues what-so-ever poking his head into the shower to see if I'm almost done, and jumping up on the bed at 3-4am, meowing and flopping over like a ragdoll for a belly rub! He is my sweet boy and because of everyone there and because of our wonderful experience, I WILL adopt again. These animals are too precious to be living caged lives. To anyone reading this that may be considering pet adoption-- PLEASE DO give these sweet babies a chance, you can tell in the way they act how thankful they are to have a real family and the love that comes with it.
Thanks again, NACC, Jake & Nick-- Ya'll rock! :)
Always,
The Hunt Family

CHARLIE
To Our Friends at the Norfolk Animal Care Center:
When we came to the Norfolk Animal Care Center in November 2008, we were looking for a companion for our new puppy. Our search began many months earlier; this is where we first saw a picture of "Sorry Charlie" on your website. I can't tell you how many times I passed by his picture in our search, all the time thinking that this pittiful looking bald, wrinkly faced dog would be too much work for our family to handle.
Three months later, after we got our puppy, Nikkus, I came across this sad looking dog again. Being a special education teacher, I decided that we all deserve a chance at a happy life. This is when I decided our family needed to meet "Sorry Charlie".
When we met this skinny, bald dog, he was a sight to see! However, his gentle nature and calm spirit is what captured our family. After a year of treatment for his severe case of mange, Charlie is a happy member of our family. He no longer bares the title of "sorry" he's just Charlie to us.
He loves to play with our girls, wrestle with his brother Nikkus and if our toddler lets him out, he really enjoys a run through the neighborhood. He always comes back! We just wanted to let you know how well Charlie is doing and we are so thankful we walked in there that day to meet this wonderful boy!

MISSY (previously Diva)
I lost my dog, Picabo, on April 17th. She had been with us for 11 ½
years and later when I lost my husband, she was just so much company.
She was also a little SPCA dog when we got her back in ’98 and she was
just the best. When I lost her, I decided not to get another dog, but a
few weeks later, I decided to stop by Animal Care just to see if I saw
another dog anything like her. While there, I met Kathy G. She took
this little mixed breed dog out to the fenced in yard and we sat,
talked, and watched this little dog for quite a while. I felt that
maybe I had taken up much of her time, but she assured me it was ok. I
didn’t complete the adoption papers that day, told her I really had to
think about this, but if I decided, I would call her back. I waited a
few days, still thinking about this little dog who had been surrendered,
just happened to turn on NNN channel 48 TV one night, and there was her
picture on the screen, “UP FOR ADOPTION.” I decided to drop back by
Animal Care, thinking if she was already gone, then I would be happy for
her, and I would know She just wasn’t meant to be for me. Well, there
she sat. It was then I decided to fill out my papers, go thru the
adoption interview, and let her be mine.
This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. She is just
so sweet and so well behaved and I just love her. She is just a
wonderful little companion and is just so happy to be with me. I would
love for her previous owner to know she now has a good home. Kathy G.,
thanks for bringing that little dog out and sitting with me that day.
You will remember her as “DIVA” but I changed her name and now she
is my little “Missy.”

SANDY
Sandy has been with me for over 6 months now what a great dog she is. She is deaf but is so very smart she knows alot of hand signals. She put on weight and has learned to eat slow. She loves her mikebones. She also gets along very well with my three cats. I wanted to send you an updated picture of her now that her hair has grown and her skin infections went away. All my friends ask me where did I get her from, when I tell them they are shocked. I say a pound dog is a great dog .It may take time, as it did with sandy but the love you get back is priceless. Please see attached picture of sandy.
Fondly,
Darlene

SQUEAK AND MAX
Hi.
Just a short update to show that the two kitties I adopted a few weeks ago, Squeak and Max, (formerly Nellie, I think) have settled in and are
getting along fine. They have already taken over my computer chair, among
other spots, and are still doing a lot of household exploring.

HANS
I thought I would let you know how the Doberman (Hans) is that I adopted in July. After having some health issues from his neutering and 3 trips to the ER within a week, Hans is very happy. We love him so much. He gets along with his siblings with an occasional snarl when it comes to me (he thinks I belong to him). All I have to do is say no fights, be nice and all is well. Hans loves riding in the truck. I forget that he’s there because he is so quiet. He has gained 25 lbs. (now weighing 75 lbs.) from his last vet visit in December. Hans does have a thyroid issue and is on meds. My husband says he is such a character. Occasionally, he will try to jump on me but normally stays down. I do think he may have been abused because we had problems with him peeing in the house in the beginning and I scolded him. Hans started shaking and distorted his face as if he was waiting to be hit. I told him it was OK that I could clean it up. Poor baby. After his meals, he goes potty outside and Hans stands on the deck waiting for me to tell him what a good boy he is and then he gives me little kisses. I also know he was never on a bed because the first time I was able to get him on the bed, he wouldn’t move. He was spread eagle. Now he loves the bed. Hans also loves his new coat that I ordered for the cold weather. He wears it proudly. I cherish every day Hans is with us.
I hope you are having a nice day and that many people will come to the shelter and adopt.

GRIFFIN and SHAMMIE
Its hard to believe that we've had Griffin (Charlie) almost a year and Shammie (Minuet) almost 2 years. They have both adjusted beautifully. Shammie and I have been working with the Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club with obedience classes. She loves it. She is such a high energy, smart girl that she really needed a job to do. It has really helped her get settled.
Griffin (Charlie) was pretty fearful when he came to us, but every day he is spending more and more time asking for attention and in the company of the pack. He still spends some time alone in his "room" (the sunroom set up for puppies-- see picture 2), but its good to know he is comfortable and loves it in there. He and his ladies (Thistle, 13 and Shammie, 3) are the best of friends.
Thank you for the wonderful work that you do!

HENRY
We adopted Henry from the NACC in April of 2008. He is just the best boy ever! He is VERY affectionate and especially loves to rear up on Ed's chest with his front paws and rub his forehead and the top of his nose on Ed's beard. He likes to join us on the kitchen table for coffee and enjoys keeping us from reading the newspapers by lying on them and giving us that "who, me?" look! You just can't get mad at Henry!

LEO
My husband Jeremy loves his boy, Leo. They are the perfect pair. In the morning, Leo gets up and cuddles with Jeremy. They wrestle on the floor, then sit next to each other on the couch. Here are Leo and Jeremy sitting outside last night whilst Jeremy was grilling. Leo being his loyal companion, was right there with him. We adopted Leo in the Fall of 2007. He became an instant part of our family and our Saturday mornings would not be complete without him on the bed between us. Its amazing how animals can pull you through tough times with their love and devotion.
Molly

Lew
We, the Baileys, adopted Lew Lew on Feb. 13th, 2009. She was kind of skinny. Now that she's been with us almost a month, you see that she has definitely put on weight and has us trained well. Here she is contentedly sitting on my husband's lap with her eyes closed! Who knew she'd be such a great lap dog. She loves chasing squirrels to the point that we had to extend our backyard fence "upward" since she could easily jump our original fence and demonstrated so! She's a riot frolicking with a tennis ball too - she leaps and twirls and races. She's also gotten to looking at herself in the mirror - trying to figure out who that dog in there is. That's funny to see. Lew Lew is indeed a love!!! We are so glad we rescued her.

Mr. Buffy
Everything is terrific! They are absolutely adorable- we couldn't have asked for more wonderful cats!! They settled in right away and are having a great time here! Mr Buffy is sweet, gentle, and loves to cuddle and be held - he's a real mush! He touches our faces very gently with his paws as if to say "thanks"... What a doll!! Amelia is quite the flirt. She's dripping in personality!! She loves to cuddle too, as long as it does not interfere with her playtime. She's always up for fun!! They have quickly gotten the hang of the stratching post which is great too! We are introducing them slowly to the rest of the "gang", and everyone is getting along great! Doobie, who is the youngest one, likes to "kitty wrestle" with Amelia. Roxie and Finnegan, being older and more reserved, just sniff them and walk away. For some reason, I think shelter cats sometimes accept other cats into a family better than others because "they have been there". Anyway, we truly have a wondeful cat family, and I want to thank the volunteers and the staff at NACC for that..... Also, "Kudos" to those that assess the animals and their personalities. I think the time NACC takes in providing accurate descriptions of each pet's personality really does help make for perfect matches. I wish more shelters has the time and the resources to do that.
Many thanks, again from "all" of us
Kim V.

Charles
About Charles, the pit we rescued in November 2008 from NACC: He has been a wonderful addition to our family and our house would not be the same without him! He is the more mature, "big" brother to our other 1 year old pit, Sadie. He learned all of our "house rules" within a couple of weeks and is the most obedient dog we have ever been around. He only had a few accidents, even though he had never lived indoors! He follows us around and sits at our feet! If I do anything, even take the trash out, he follows me and "makes sure I'm "ok". He also thinks he's a lapdog even though he's 60 lbs plus! Charles is whatever dog you want him to be: lazy indoor dog, outdoor running companion, or beach buddy! Thank you for saving Charles so that he could be added to our family!

Raven
Last year my boyfriend and I adopted a mastiff/pit mix named Raven. Her name now is Brandee. When we first got Brandee home, she was very shy and skittish. If we picked up something like a broom or mop she'd run to a corner and shake. She hated car rides too. A year later, Brandee is spoiled and loved by everyone who sees her. She now enjoys going to the beach, park, and she even loves going for car rides! We could not ask for a better dog! She is so smart and loves to play and is eager to learn new things!

Booky
We adopted Booky a couple of days after Christmas in 2007. He was very quiet and afraid when he first came home, but he turned out to be one of the friendliest and most loyal and loving dogs I have ever met. He came home to a mom, a boy, and a kitty cat named Angel. Booky has a grandma too, who takes him for runs on the beach. He also loves to go to the dog park in Colonial Place, and to his friend Roscoe's (a Jack Russell) house while mom is at work. Booky loves popcorn, and he has gained 10 lbs. since he came to us. He receives great care at Bayview Veterinarian. Booky is greatly loved and spoiled daily. We would never want to be without him, and we are so grateful to the Animal Care Center for giving our doggy another chance at a safe and happy home.

Minnie
We wanted to thank everyone at Norfolk Animal Care Center for all their help! We have had Minnie (previously known as Amazon) for over a month or so now and she is doing fantastic! It took awhile finding the "right" dog for our family. It was important to us that our new family friend be good with children and vice versa. The Norfolk Animal Care Center allowed us to come by daily, which is what we did. So, thank you for allowing us to take our time and always answering our questions. We will update you soon with new pics because Minnie is a big girl and she is still growing!

Kaitlyn
We adopted Cameo now Kaitlyn from the NAMC in March 2008. When we visited your shelter
she was an underweight and just had puppies stray. She had numbers shaved in to her hair and you guys were thinking
she was a puppy mill or hunting dog. Her hair grew back beautifully, by the way. My husband was drawn to her cage
and we put our name on the list to adopt her. What a long 10 days !! We visited her everyday and were excited to bring her home. She has been the greatest addition to our home. She is well behaved and just a joy to have. THANKS so much!! Your center is very clean and the staff is excellent, we have told many people about the shelter, and they have adopted also!
Thanks again,

Schrodie & Estlin
These two brothers (Schrodie the black fella and Estlin, the white kitty) were adopted almost a year ago. They’ve grown so big, and love to spend their days play fighting, and taking long naps in the sun. Estlin, prefers to spend his time as a wallflower, watching the world, similar to the poet he’s named after, while Schrodie loves attention and will stalk you from room to room until you give him belly rubs.
Thanks so much for allowing me the opportunity to adopt these lovely guys! |

Bandit
We brought Bandit home from Norfolk Animal Care Center around Valentine's Day 2007. She was one sick puppy - suffering from a bad ear yeast infection, bite marks on her ears, 10-15 pounds underweight, and afraid of everyone and everything. She was a very brave dog to go through all her ear treatments. A year later, she is the picture of health. I have never seen a dog so excited to go out the door for a walk or run. She can barely sit still to get the leash on. She can run 4-5 miles with me at a pop and always seems ready for more. She is still a little skittish around strangers, but she loves to play with her sister Starbuck and with other dogs at the dog park. At times she thinks she is a 60 pound lap dog. I guess my only point here is, tell people not to overlook the sick dogs at the pound. With time and love they get better, and I think they, knowing that you helped them, ome to love you even more. |

Abigail
I cannot tell you how thrilled we are to have Abigail join our family! She is adorable and sweet with a turbo-charged purr. She is equally happy playing or just hanging out. She and our daughter have become fast friends but I can’t wait till the children go to bed so we can hang out. |

Mozart
We adopted "Mozart", now affectionately called Domino in May. Initially we had another feline in mind to adopt but when we met Domino it was instant attraction! He is such a part of our family it feels like he has been with us forever! I think he may have been a dog in his previously life because he runs after the kids and jumps on them to get them to play with him. He loves sleeping in everyones bed. Throughout the night he moves from one bed to the other. He is alot of fun and we enjoy having him part of our family!

Julep
I just wanted to send you some updated pics of Julep. She is doing great! She is now about 20lbs heavier than when we first got her (64lbs)! But rest assured, she was recently at the vet's office and is a very healthy and happy girl! In February we bought our first home and we recently had a fence installed. Now Julep can play off leash and enjoy her pool!!
Hope all is well in VA!

Tory
I wanted to let you all know that I am very happy and healthy in my new home in Chesapeake. I arrived here on July 11 after receiving a lot of tender loving care at your facility in Norfolk. My new pet parents are spoiling me rotten! I have completed healing from my spaying and have had great medical care from my Veterinarian at the Chesapeake Animal Medical Clinic.
I will always remember fondly the wonderful love and care you provided me, and your efforts in helping me find my new home.
Lots of Love!

Kobe
Hello to the wonderful people at the Norfolk Animal Care Center! We adopted Kobe on July 1st, and he has already become a permanent member of our family by capturing the hearts of all of us...and our beds! He is so wonderful with my 5- and 6-year old, which was my main concern. He is already housebroken, and behaves very well for a puppy of his age and size. He is silly, and throws little tantrums when he doesn't get his way, but he is wonderful! He brings our shoes to the door to go on walks, and has made tremendous progress with the leash--almost a pro now! We enrolled him in a doggy daycare and college for some training and social time, and he already has a few "girlfriends" who follow him around--but who can blame them? He's so handsome. He is amazing! Thanks so much for choosing us as his new family! I am attaching some photos, and will keep you updated, and may even stop in for a visit one day! Take care,
Josh, Jessica, Joseph and Jenna and Kobe Sisson |

Teddy
Enclosed is a picture of our cat, Teddy. We adopted him from your shelter on April 23, 1998. On his birthday, we always remind him, and ourselves, how after searching for weeks for the perfect cat, we saw Teddy and knew he was "the one". He is such a ham! And just the best friend and companion. So all these years later, we just wanted to check in to let you know how well he is doing and to thank you for all the great work you do.
Sincerely,
Paul and Zorada Piepoli |
